About this event

Who: Oregon health care providers who provide diabetes management care or support to Oregon Health Plan (Medicaid) members, particularly primary care, behavioral health and oral health providers. Other clinic staff (care coordinators, traditional health workers, etc.) who interact with patients with diabetes are also invited to attend. This Level 1 training is intended for providers either new to motivational interviewing or who haven't recently attended a training in it.

What: Dana Sturtevant, MS, RD, will lead full-day virtual trainings focused on motivational interviewing for diabetes management. The training will use Zoom videoconferencing. The session will focus on increasing your confidence and skills to facilitate conversations with patients about diabetes management. At the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the spirit and key principles of motivational interviewing
  • Use open-ended questions to understand the patient’s concerns, needs and desires related to their diabetes management
  • Name three resistance-producing clinician behaviors
  • Frame diabetes management advice using terminology that is more receptive to patients
